Ultrasound during pregnancy: why, when and how it is done?

Getting an ultrasound done is indeed an emotional time for the parents as this allows you to see your baby even before you can hold it in your arms. Thanks to the technology! We now have ultrasound techniques that let you see your baby’s images. A pregnancy ultrasound, also known as sonogram is a prenatal test advised to most of the expecting mothers. Ultrasound uses the high-frequency sound waves to show images of your baby, placenta and ovaries during varied times of your pregnancy. The procedure records the echoes and transforms them into pictures or videos.  This way, your doctor can keep a check of your baby’s health and growth.

You may be able to see your baby’s hands, legs and other body parts, depending upon when the ultrasound has been done. Ultrasound can also tell you if it is a boy or a girl. Although in India and in many other countries, the revelation of sex is unethical and prohibited.

You can sense the baby’s heartbeat, see him swim inside you. So, this technology has become another source of happiness to those expecting their child.
