Pneumonia is an infection the lungs, which can cause the air sacs (alveoli) of the lungs to fill up with pus or fluid. It can involve one or both the sides. There are over 30 causes linked to pneumonia, including bacterial, viral, fungal, atypical pneumonia and other less common types of infection. Symptoms include cough, fever, chills and difficulty in breathing. These symptoms can be mild, moderate or severe. The intensity of the infection is determined by many factors such as the micro-organism causing the infection, your overall health as well as your age.
Treatment depends on the type of pneumonia you are infected with. Most of the viral pneumonias do not have any specific treatment and usually improve on their own. Antibiotics are used for treating bacterial pneumonia and to speed up recovery from mycoplasma-induced pneumonia. Mostly, pneumonia does not require an emergency treatment, but a severe infection may require hospitalisation. Complications of pneumonia may include lung abscess, respiratory failure or sepsis leading to organ failure. People who are otherwise healthy usually show a quick recovery if prompt treatment and care is initiated. However, in children under 5 years of age and in adults above the age of 65 years, pneumonia tends to be more serious. Pneumonia also tends to be a serious medical condition in people with pre-existing long-term diseases especially those of the lungs, kidney or the heart, and in people who have a weak immune system.
