There is a great sense of satisfaction in biting into a bright, red, sweet and juicy apple to satiate your hunger. An apple is one of the most popular, delicious and nutritious fruits on the earth. The apple (Malus Pumila) belongs to the Rosaceae family. The apple tree originated in Central Asia, and its wild ancestor Malus Sieversii is found even today.

There are more than 7500 known cultivars of apple and each one has different uses. The size of apples can vary anywhere from a size of a cherry to a size of a grapefruit. The heaviest apple weighed 1.849 kilograms and was harvested by Chisato Iwasaki in Japan. Some of them are cultivated to be eaten raw and fresh (dessert apples), while some of them are cultivated for cooking (cooking apples) and making cider. The apples that are commercially popular are soft but crisp. They come in a  variety of colours such as red, green, yellow etc. Red colored apples are rich in antioxidants. Green and yellow apples contain plenty of quercetin, that helps enhance one's psychological health. Apple is also known to make your skin healthy, flawless and soft.

Apples are entirely edible including their skin. The skin of the apple is thin but the inner flesh is thick and juicy. The inner part of the apple softens once it is ripe. Apple seeds that are present in the inner core are believed to be dangerous if they are eaten. The flesh and the skin, which are a rich source of anthocyanins and tannins provide the main source of nutrients in an apple. This fruit is full of antioxidants, vitamins, fiber, and other nutrients. All of these nutrients make apple an ideal choice of fruit for everyone. No wonder they say, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”

A study was conducted by an Italian consortium in 2010. The study was primarily to decode the genome of the apple. This study led to scientists researching more about why apples, the “miracle food” is so good for our health and which components present in apples are beneficial for our health.
